Roosters-bard-laughAbout Rian Basilio & The Roosters
In a culture where image and material value weigh heavier on a musician s success than actual talent or creed, a young man from a small town on the island of Hawaii, has set out to resurrect the conscious music and harmonious spirit of an era not so long ago, yet long forgotten. Rian Basilio and The Roosters are a group in which a perfect combination of talent and soul has come together to create a unique and very progressive sound. While keeping the foundation of their music rooted deeply in the classic genres of reggae, they have been able to fuse elements of each musician s unique background and style, cultivating a vibe that feels vintage yet completely fresh and original. Rian’s unique voice only intensifies his already poetic and deeply personal lyrics, which touch upon subjects from world and political turmoil to equally important issues of the heart and soul. The narrative and messages that exist within his lyrics are delivered to the listener through haunting melodies and hooks that will linger in the sub-conscious long after the song has ended.

The Roosters are also no amateurs when it comes to live performance. Members have played and toured with reggae legends such as Lee Scratch Perry, Eek a Mouse, Barrington Levy, Michael Rose, The Wailing Souls, HR of Bad Brains, The Rastafarians, Detour Posse, Haile Maskel and many more. As The Roosters , they have played and toured all over central and southern California as well as Nevada and Arizona. They have graced the stages of iconic venues like The Roxy in Hollywood, The Independent in San Francisco, LA’s Dub Club and The House of Blues in both San Diego and Anaheim. From the moment they step on stage, they come full force with an energy that can ignite the masses. Whether its hardcore roots infused with dub step, or up beat rocksteady vibes mixed with soulful r&b, The Roosters deliver a message and spread a vibe that is sure to open your mind and leave your soul irie!

“It’s as if Led Zeppelin, Bootsie Collins, Bob Marley, and Ice Berg Slim were wrapped up into one bad-ass persona.” Griffith Jackson – Sacramento News & Review

With their strong stage presence and funky beats, F.O.W. has rapidly spread across the globe. Based out of San Diego, California, the group is currently on their 10th national tour across the U.S. and recently finished their 3rd in Australia, where they’ve played for sold out crowds from the Gold to Sunshine Coasts. Between tours, the Fish have been working on their latest CD Cantangelo Skies, due out this fall.

Cousins Kyle and Brandon Moon began the group in 2000. This multi talented duo consistently switches between guitar, bass and vocals, creating a diverse sound within the music. On percussion is Michael Turco, an established studio musician out of L.A. Their full set can include an hour of acoustic music followed by danceable beats, depending on the venue’s needs.

Socially conscience, F.O.W. strives to use their music to its fullest potential, raising funds and donating their talent in support of such causes as hurricane relief, the Gulf oil disaster, breast cancer, and foster care. worlds finest 1About World’s Finest

Creating what could best be described as Neo-Americana, World’s Finest has bridged the gap between ska, Americana, dub and bluegrass. Hailing from all over the country, the band is comprised of five members: Chris Couch (acoustic guitar, vocals), Dan Hurley (electric banjo, vocals), Sean McLean (sax, electric guitar, vocals), Evan Malfer (electric + upright bass), and Mike Apodaca (drums). Even with their very different musical and geographical backgrounds, they have undoubtedly found inspiration in each others’ taste, talents, and sensibilities.

Strong songwriting, beautiful vocal harmonies, engaging band interplay and improvisation are only a handful of the many reasons why the band has garnered critical acclaim, and an ever-growing regional and national fan base.

World’s Finest has shared the stage with Steel Pulse, The Motet, Rusted Root, Pert Near Sandstone, Fruition, The Skatalites and Anthony B and have been fortunate enough to perform at North West String Summit, What The Festival?! and Symbiosis Gathering, as well as many local and regional festivals.

4:30 – 5:45 pm Patrick Walsh (Cali Country)
6:00 – 8:30 pm Tubaluba (Brass)

Tubaluba

About Tubaluba
Tubaluba captures the spirit of New Orleans, and conveys it through their brass street band rhythm and style they call, Jambalaya Brass Rock.

Like the New Orleans dish that lent its name to their style, Tubaluba combines the staple musical provisions of jazz and soul with the trinity of funk, R&B & rock ‘n’ roll into a unique concoction designed to make you feel like you’ve been transported into the middle of a raucous 2nd line parade surrounded by vocals, piano, drums and a mess of horns.

Formed in 2009, Tubaluba initially drew its musical inspirations from of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Dr. John, the Cosimo Matassa influence of early New Orleans R&B and rock ‘n’ roll artists like Irma Thomas and Lee Dorsey. Over the past 5 years, their sound has expanded to encompass the rock ‘n’ roll past and funky present of their hometown of Seattle, WA. The band’s songwriting continues to evolve, blending fresh horn hooks with powerful vocal melodies.

The live Tubaluba experience is a high-energy combination of a stage show and street parade. The stage show has the feeling of a rock ‘n’ roll tent revival with fans chanting vocal hooks and trying out dance moves alongside the band’s soundtrack. The band has also been known to become “Tubalubradours” and head out into the crowd to, sometimes quite literally, take the party to the street.

About Patrick Walsh
Story teller, producer and multi instrumentalist Patrick Walsh brings a fresh sound from the world of no genres.  Born and raised in the gold rush towns of Northern California he often incorporates local history and experiences into his songs.  Classically trained and first introduced to music through the piano at age six, he now plays and records with nearly twenty different instruments.  Walsh has been steadily performing his one man band originals live opening up for such acts as Hank Williams III, and Wayne “The Train” Hancock.  A firm believer in “if you want it done right do it yourself” Walsh writes, plays all instruments, records, masters, and even does most of the art work for his albums.  With thirty six previously released albums, he is now working on number thirty seven which should be out in 2015.

Scott Pemberton Trio w/ Black Star Safari | August 21st, 2014

scott p

Scott Pemberton Trio
Infectious and inventive dance music. Funky, surfy, rock propelled by Scotts virtuosic guitar playing. If James Brown, Dick Dale and Jimi Hendrix planted a fruit tree in portland this sound might have fallen off.

“It’s like Ween meet’s Hendrix, but completely original” Boise Weekly

“At a festival FULL of guitarists (Safeway Water Front Blues Festival 2012), none played like Pemberton or was as fun to watch” Oregonian

“Virtuosic and brilliant” Glide Magazine

“Pemberton is a multi-genre master and a clever lyricist who can convey joy while digging deep.” Willamette Week”

Scott’s doing something new with the guitar, and beyond that, he’s doing something new with American music. He has his own unique flavor of Roots/Funk/Americana/Rock, and people are responding. His approach to the guitar is definitely not traditional but his virtuosity is undeniable.

Although he has supported himself with music since he was a teen, as a touring musician Scott is just a baby. He set out as a full time touring musician about a year and a half ago and things have been progressing fast. This summer he will be playing major festivals on the west coast, the east coast, and Canada with countless club dates in between—and he’s doing this without assistance from any label, management company or big booking agency. Just word of mouth, and the spark is spreading.

Mojo Green – Heavy Horn Funk and Soul

Mojo Green, Exploding from the shadow of the Sierra Nevada mountains, have been staking their claim over the past 4 years as one of the regions premier horn driven funk and soul dance bands. Mojo Green, originally formed in 2009 has over the past several years transformed into a Funk and Soul Horn Driven powerhouse with a sound all their own. Made up of: Frank “Fletch” Fletcher on Drums and Trevor Rice on Bass laying down the tight and funky grooves that create the foundation, with Tim Bain on Guitar adding some tasty, deep funk rhythms and blistering lead lines, a powerhouse heavy horn section composed of Kevin Thomas on Bari Sax,Monty Adams on Trumpet and John Bennum on Trombone with Jenes Carter adding her Soulful and Sexy vocal leads, Mojo Green plays a style of dance music that is extremely funky and very sexy.

Musical Charis formed in the summer of 2008 as a male/female 4 piece with the intentions of creating an encouraging, light-hearted atmosphere for songwriting and creativity. “Charis” is the Greek word for gift, so the name literally translates to “Musical Gifts” Since then, the group has grown into a cabaret of multi-instrumental musicians who constantly tour, write and record new material. The band even made time to open “Musical Charis Music School” for low-income families in Sacramento. Members of the band teach private piano, guitar, and voice lessons to over 50 youngsters in the area.

“People People” (JMB Records) the 10 song full length album released on July 23rd, 2010 was co-engineered by John Baccigaluppi (Editor of Tape OP Magazine) “Forward” may be the highlight of the ten track record, a catchy indie rock number that is in a class of its own on this album. The instrumentation here and throughout the record is extremely impressive, as each band member know their own roles. This makes for a wonderful chemistry that is audible even in a studio recording.”

40 Watt Hype w/ Candelaria | August 7th, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-07-22 at 3.57.51 PM
40 Watt Hype at Live at Lakeview in 2012

40 Watt Hype (A three-peat headliner of Live at Lakeview)

In the center of California, a culture that is the underbelly of LA and San Francisco. from the bass bumping out of the ’84 Cutlass to the backyard fiestas, the music of 40 Watt Hype is created—live Hip Hop cultivated from the seeds of a favorite dusty Soul record with a Latin b side.

Born and influenced by the streets of Fresno, 40 Watt Hype started (out of necessity) at a backyard party by front man Aaron Wall and as soon as the music started, the people danced and embraced this new sound. Wall—songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer—a second generation Dutchman from Holland, grew up listening to a multitude of styles and forms of music, from R&B to Hip Hop to Latin. When you hear and see Wall perform, you can feel the love and influence of the environment he is the product of, breaking stereotypes, as he states, “nothing turns heads quicker than seeing a white boy sing and rhyme in Spanish”. As a kid in Eastside Fresno, he learned to speak Spanish from hearing it throughout the neighborhood and from kids at school, and during high school in Fresno’s urban Westside, R&B and Hip Hop further impacted itself on his musical journey.

With the new album, “Push”, 40 Watt Hype blends equal parts rhythms and blues of Anthony Hamilton, evident in “Wannabe”; the hip hop ear of Mos Def as heard in “Echoes Through the Ghetto”; and the Latin touch of the Calle 13 in “Mas y Mas”—creating a kind of music that crosses genres and can’t be pigeonholed. Lyrically, the focus on optimism and hope “Only the Strong Survive” personifies the never-say-die attitude the band has maintained since its inception.

Candelaria
Candelaria is at the forefront of the global cumbia-fusion movement. Truly independent, Candelaria wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered their debut CD at their own studio in Oakland, CA. From this album, the single “No No No” was recently featured on NPR’s Alt.Latino, which described the group as a 2013 emerging latin band to watch. Their irresistible combination of the traditional with the modern has filled dance floors across North America, from San Francisco bay area venues such as The Elbo Room, The Independent, Moe’s Alley and The New Parish, to festivals like the Mateel Community Center Summer Arts Festival, San Francisco Carnaval, Bliss Fest, Sierra Nevada Music Festial, and Lightning in a Bottle Festival.

In 2006, three musicians from across the Americas found themselves in the Bay Area –scouring Craigslist for other like-minded musicos, ready to take their musicianship to a different level– and though they didn’t know it at the time, these folks were on the verge of creating a previously unknown style of music: cumbia-dub. Bassist Daniel Yockey (Wisconsin, U.S.), conguero Carlos Mario Aguirre (Colombia) and gaitero / guitarist Adley Penner  (Canada) met while playing with Colombian folklore group, Aluna.  Inspired by the raw, rootsy rhythms of cumbia, yet growing restless with only playing covers, they began to experiment with the style. They applied dub studio techniques and reggae style bass lines to traditional cumbia and other Colombian rhythms, developing a completely unique style of dance music with electronic sensibilities and a raw, live feel. Though this ground-breaking idea was first conceived in 2006, it did not reach full fruition until the autumn of 2009, when Candelaria was formed under its current name in the heart of Oakland: the Fruitvale district.
